Prepare for the Cold Weather

Colder weather can sometimes aggravate pain for people. We don’t know the exact reasons or causes, but there is a theory. The change in barometric pressure may be the culprit. Perhaps the reduced air pressure enables tissues in a joint to expand. With this expansion comes more pain for an already inflamed or swollen joint.

Water

It is important to stay hydrated all year long. However, in the winter we can fall into the trap of drinking coffee, tea, and hot chocolate to help stay warm. While these are not bad in moderation, it is important to limit the amount of caffiene you consume. Try replacing on cup of coffee with a glass of water to help your body rid itself of waste over the winter.

Heat

It is a good idea to check with your chiropractor or doctor before applying heat to swollen joints as cold/ice works better for certain situations. If you’ve got the go ahead to apply heat, then enjoy the use of a heating blanket and heating pads. You’ll be nice and toasty!

Mood

The colder weather and dreary, gloomy days can affect the mood. It is important to be aware of how you are feeling through the colder season as pain may be associated with your mood. Make sure to address any feelings of anxiety or depression; this may help alleviate seasonal pain you feel.
