Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain Kennesaw ChiropracticThere are many causes of lower back pain, many can be linked to a general cause, such as muscle strain. While others may be a specific and diagnosable condition, including degenerative disc disease or a herniated disc.

By some estimates, four out of five adults will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives and it is one of the leading reasons for doctor visits.

It may seem strange, but the severity of pain is often unrelated to the extent of physical damage. For example, spasms from a simple muscle strain can cause excruciating lower back pain that can make it difficult to walk or even stand. The pain associated with a large herniated disc or completely degenerated disc can sometimes be completely painless.

Types of Low Back Pain

Low back pain is typically classified as either acute or chronic:

Acute back pain is short term, generally lasting from a few days to a few weeks. Some acute pain ailments can become more serious if left untreated.

Chronic back pain is defined as pain that persists for more than three months. The pain may be progressive, or may occasionally flare up and then return to a lower level of pain.

Some types of low back pain can have no identifiable cause, this doesn’t mean that the pain doesn’t exist. The cause of the patient’s pain may not be identifiable, but this does not necessarily signify that the pain is psychosomatic. Many patients with pain will not have a directly identifiable cause of their pain.
