Stretching Matters

Do you ever wonder how you can help prevent your child from getting hurt at the gym? Or perhaps this applies to you as you visit the gym or begin training for your first 5K. No matter where you are in life, it is important to remember that stretching matters when it comes to children, teens, and adults involved in sports and training.

While many individuals are aware of the need for the recommended amount of physical exercise, injury can occur if muscles are not properly warmed up, stretched, and strengthened. The American Chiropractic Association points to the importance of a proper warm up, stretching period, and strength training to keep everyone involved in training and sports safe. When engaging in any form of exercise, be mindful of the following key ingredients for a workout that will keep you from feeling unnecessary pain!

Warm Up

Before beginning a walking, running, or other exercise program, get those muscles moving. Sometimes this can be in the form of walking a few laps, and doing some basic stretching in the form of simple stretches. This will not only increase body temperature, and therefore muscle temperature, but it will also get that heartbeat up as it begins to pump a little quicker. Suggested warm-up activities include:

  • toe touches (regular and inverted)
  • knee hugs
  • lunges
  • groiners

StretchingRest and relax

Warming up gets muscles ready to work, and stretching helps prevent injury in tight muscles. If you are prone to lower back pain, consider the following combination of stretches:

  • Supermans or cobras (three times)
  • Hamstring stretches

Strength Building

With any workout program, such as walking, running, or swimming, you are gauranteed an aerobic and cardiovascular workout. In addition to the cardio, make sure you are taking time to build strength as well. Free weights can be added in for simple shoulder and arm strength building after a run or swim. And don’t forget to take the time to work on those abs so that you’re back is not overcompensating for your core.

For additional tips in keeping safe when it comes to your time at the gym, check out what the American Chiropractic Association has to offer. And don’t forget to make your appointment with Dr. Supnick at the Chiropractic Center of Kennesaw to keep your body aligned during your training season.

Relieve Back and Neck Pain for Kids with Proper Device Posture

With the ever increasing presence of technology in our lives, there has been a widespread increase in stress injuries to the neck, spine and other major joints due to improper posture related to the use of computers and other electronic devices. It is important for parents to be aware of how their children are using these electronics and to ensure that they are not putting themselves at risk for injury while they are in front of the screen.Child at Computer

One way to promote proper computer and device usage for children is to set up their computer workstation to fit them. If the computer area is shared with multiple people, make sure that the chair and screen are easily adjustable for all users to work comfortably. Position the screen so that it is slightly below eye level so that your children will be seated with their necks in a neutral position while they are working. Purchasing an office chair and desk with ergonomics in mind is helpful.

Another important tip for parents is to closely monitor the amount of screen time their children are getting. If they have big projects that require large amounts of computer time, make sure that they are taking regular breaks to stretch their muscles, as well as staying hydrated so that they will not experience muscle fatigue from sitting in one position for too long.

Lastly, for kids who use cell phones on a regular basis, be aware of the stress placed on the neck, back and shoulders when sending frequent text messages. There have been many reports of tightened neck muscles, shoulder strain and even migraines caused by constantly hunching forward and looking down at small screens.

Being aware of the ergonomics of device usage will prevent the need for chiropractic visits long-term.

3 Tips to Sleeping Sound

What keeps you up at night? According to the American Chiropractic Association between 40-60% of the population has difficulty sleeping. Maybe your sleep is interrupted by the pressure you feel from work or family, or the stress and worry associated with daily to-do lists and tasks.

Regardless of what it is that keeps you up the simple truth remains. That truth is that sleep is key when it comes to good health. If sleep is key to our good health, then lack of sleep is certainly a serious issue. After  all, proper sleep is what allows our body to refresh and rejuvenate for the next day. Dr. Frederick R. Carrick, president of the American Chiropractic Association’s Council on Neurology says, “Sleep is one of the most important functions of the brain.”Tired

How Do I Get a Good Nights Sleep?

At the Chiropractic Center of Kennesaw, we have a few tips to help you troubleshoot your difficulties with sleeping. For it is our goal to assist you in living life to it’s fullest and that includes getting a good night’s rest.

1. Routine Matters

Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. If you are a parent of a school-age child, you know how important this is for children during the school year. If the effects are obvious in regards to kid’s schedules, imagine the havoc an unsteady sleep and wake pattern wreaks on your body.

2. Eliminiate Sensory Stimuli

Keeping the bedroom cool and dark is conducive to having a good nights’s sleep. Cool does not mean freezing, but simply cool rather than warm. Avoiding extreme heat or cold can help regulate the body temperature in a more natural manner. Additionally, if bedtime comes before sunset in portions of the year with longer daylight, it may be worth it to invest in room darkening window covers. Natural sunlight provides a natural stimulant and eliminating this as well as artificial light, will help in allowing for more restful and uninterrupted sleep.

3. Early Dinner

This is a hard thing for any modern families. With Atlanta traffic, sports practices for kids, homework, housework, and a myriad of other activities that demand our time, it is tough to get dinner on the table at a decent hour. Well, when we eat dinner, that of course is not the end of it. Physiologically, the body has a lot of work to do with digesting that dinner. Eating earlier, before 6pm if possible, will allow your body to digest before you sleep rather than having your digestive system fully active as you are fighting to sleep.

We genuinely believe that these 3 tips will make a difference in accomplishing a good nights’s rest. If restlessness or sleeplessness continues, it is possible that your body is out of alignment or there is another underlying issue. Our staff at the Chiropractic Center of Kennesaw includes Dr. Todd Supnick, a Doctor of Chiropractic, and a phenomenal massage therapist. We can easily provide an appointment that will fit into your schedule.

3 Tips to Prevent Back Pain

Back pain is something that half of all working Americans experience each year. It can be caused by repeated stress from heavy lifting, poor posture, sleeping in the wrong positions, or sudden jerks and jolts. The American Chiropractic Association has shared the following tips to help prevent back pain.

Stretch

We’ve all seen runner stretch their muscles before running, yet so often we don’t take advantage of this important step before completing other physical activities. Simple household chores such as gardening, lawn work, laundry, car maintenance, vacuuming, and general cleaning may leave you in pain if you are not warming up those muscle groups first. Take time for yourself with a little preventative maintenance and stretch before taking on those chores that generally leave you a little sore afterward. Shoe Pain

Footwear Counts

Never wear a shoe just for the statement of fashion. The true value should be found in comfort and wear. Flip flops offer little in the area of support, and those high heels that ladies so often wear can do a number on the back and posture with their lack of comfort. The two key ingredients in choosing shoes include selecting shoes that are comfortable and supportive.

Get Active

It is important to remain active. This may include biking, walking, running, swimming, or another alternative. Whatever the case, keeping yourself active will help reduce the chances of experiencing back pain as a result of sudden exertion that your body is not used to.

Auto Accidents and Insurance

If you find that you are unfortunately in a car accident, and it is not your fault, you most likely won’t have to pay a dime for your healthcare. The insurance company for the driver at fault will pay medical expenses.car accident

There is no need to settle for less than the best after being the unfortunate victim of an automobile accident. Whiplash, back pain, and neck pain are all possible side effects associated with the aftermath of a car wreck. When suffering, it is essential that an experienced chiropractor assist in adjusting misalignments that are the result of a car accident.

Dr. Todd Supnick is not only experienced, but he comes with plenty of recommendations.

Does Holistic Healing Work?

To paraphrase a prediction Thomas Edison made back in 1902, the doctor of tomorrow won’t give patients drugs or other concoctions. He will instead concentrate on teaching his patients about caring for the human body, the foods they eat, and how to prevent disease.Spine

The Truth About the Human Body

The human body has an innate capacity for self-healing. But, if the body is dealing with stress or is out of alignment, self-healing is drastically slowed and even halted, while the body deals with everything else. This is one reason why a person in ill health often has multiple things going on. One starts, another follows, then everything snowballs.

Instead of treating the whole person, modern medicine focuses on treating a particular condition or symptom. That is its biggest flaw.

Does Holistic Healing Work?

The answer is yes. Holistic healing concentrates on bringing the body back to optimal health with a comprehensive set of solutions that address the entire person, not just the disease or symptom.

Take chiropractic treatments, for example. While most people associate it with healing sprains and strains, it’s also useful for treating an assortment of medical conditions like ADHD, asthma, and depression. When the body is in alignment, the body will start to heal itself.

Adding natural ingredients like coconut oil to your diet can clear up a number of medical conditions. People who use it report improvements in conditions like heart disease, diabetes, thyroid conditions, IBS, chronic fatigue, and low energy.

Essential oils are another example. Certain smells trigger specific reactions within the human body. Lavender, lemongrass, and peppermint help trigger relaxation, for example. Wintergreen and spruce are good for chronic pain relief.

Is Text Neck Real?

A recent CNN video was released featuring one 14-year-old girl’s diagnosis and treatment of Text Neck.Neck Pain

With teenagers and many professionals using their mobile devices for a wide range of activities, many find themselves looking down at the screen on a regular basis. This constant motion can be quite strenuous on the neck and cause Text Neck. Common symptoms include:

  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Tightened neck muscles
  • Shoulders rounded and hunched forward
  • Migraines

If you or a young one at home are using a smart phone or other mobile device on a regular basis and it is causing you to lean forward and look down, it is important to be aware and take action to reverse the damaging effects. WebMD suggests changing positions in an effort to alleviate stress placed on the neck. For example, laying down and texting on the phone is one way to adjust the position. Additionally, WebMD suggests:

  • Stretching (this is easy to do at home or at the office)
  • Massage therapy
  • Chiropractic adjustments

While a sports physical will provide the all clear for an athlete to participate in practices and the upcoming season, it does not address what do to should some sort of trauma take place afterward. Neck Pain and How Chiropractic Care May Help You

Ignore. This one word is the action that many people take when it comes to neck pain. Ignoring pain and discomfort will not make the problem go away. It does not matter if neck pain is a result of a one time sudden jolt such as that experienced in a car accident, or if is the result of sleeping the wrong way night after night. Regardless of the cause, it is important that a doctor of chiropractic care determine the source of the pain.Kennesaw

Determining the Source of Neck Pain

Chiropractors generally ask questions about the pain in order to get a clear picture of the source of the pain. Determining a cause, a specific location, or both will assist in creating an appropriate approach for treatment. Chiropractors will usually ask questions such as the following as suggested by the American Chiropractic Association:

  • Have you done anything for your neck pain?
  • Does the pain stay in one area of your body, or does it radiate and travel to other locations?
  • How long have you been experiencing the pain?
  • Has anything worked to help reduce the pain, or has anything made the pain worse?

Determining a location and/or a cause will help a doctor of chiropractic to know which locations along the cervical spine (your neck) may need adjustment. The neck contains seven small vertebrae that begin at the base of the skull. Any misalignment within these seven vertebrae will lead to varying levels of pain and discomfort. After determining a specific location in the cervical spine that is the root cause of pain, a neck adjustment, which is also known as cervical manipulation, is the procedure commonly used in chiropractic care. This procedure is most often done by hand and often reduces the amount of pain experienced by a patient and increases mobility in the form of tilting and turning the head.

At the Chiropractic Center of Kennesaw, we believe that the best approach in managing pain in the cervical spine is through chiropractic adjustment. This involves care without painkillers which is optimal for a holistic approach to healing. Contact our Kennesaw chiropractic office for an appointment today.

Should I See a Chiropractor During Pregnancy?

pregnancy and chiropractorsPregnancy can often be as uncomfortable as it is exciting.  Bodily changes often bring joint, neck and back pain.  Nausea and the anticipation of a baby can bring on anxiety.

Not only are there no known negative repercussions for consulting a chiropractor during pregnancy, but seeing a chiropractor can help alleviate these symptoms and would be beneficial.

Chiropractics During Pregnancy

Employing a chiropractor can do more than relieve pain and anxiety.  It may help reduce labor times, reduce nausea and prevent cesarean delivery.  Some chiropractors study specifically to serve pregnant women. They utilize tables set up for a pregnant woman’s body and use techniques tailored to avoid pressing on her abdomen.

Problems of Misalignment

As your body changes with pregnancy, the spine and joints can become misaligned.  This can lead to pelvic misalignment and can lead to loss of space for the baby or difficulty for the baby to correctly position for delivery.

Consulting a chiropractor during pregnancy can assist with these problems.  The focus on chiropractic care is to bring these areas back into alignment.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy benefits both mother and child and many mothers choose to have chiropractic care for their children after they are born as well. There are many recorded benefits to regular care for children.

Seeing a chiropractor can have long-term benefits.  Taking care of your body and the body of your child and resolving small, potential problems now will ensure better health later.
