While many individuals are aware of the need for the recommended amount of physical exercise, injury can occur if muscles are not properly warmed up, stretched, and strengthened. The American Chiropractic Association points to the importance of a proper warm up, stretching period, and strength training to keep everyone involved in training and sports safe. When engaging in any form of exercise, be mindful of the following key ingredients for a workout that will keep you from feeling unnecessary pain!

Warm Up

Before beginning a walking, running, or other exercise program, get those muscles moving. Sometimes this can be in the form of walking a few laps, and doing some basic stretching in the form of simple stretches. This will not only increase body temperature, and therefore muscle temperature, but it will also get that heartbeat up as it begins to pump a little quicker. Suggested warm-up activities include:

  • toe touches (regular and inverted)
  • knee hugs
  • lunges
  • groiners

StretchingRest and relax

Warming up gets muscles ready to work, and stretching helps prevent injury in tight muscles. If you are prone to lower back pain, consider the following combination of stretches:

  • Supermans or cobras (three times)
  • Hamstring stretches

Strength Building

With any workout program, such as walking, running, or swimming, you are gauranteed an aerobic and cardiovascular workout. In addition to the cardio, make sure you are taking time to build strength as well. Free weights can be added in for simple shoulder and arm strength building after a run or swim. And don’t forget to take the time to work on those abs so that you’re back is not overcompensating for your core.

Relieve Back and Neck Pain for Kids with Proper Device Posture

With the ever increasing presence of technology in our lives, there has been a widespread increase in stress injuries to the neck, spine and other major joints due to improper posture related to the use of computers and other electronic devices. It is important for parents to be aware of how their children are using these electronics and to ensure that they are not putting themselves at risk for injury while they are in front of the screen.Child at Computer

One way to promote proper computer and device usage for children is to set up their computer workstation to fit them. If the computer area is shared with multiple people, make sure that the chair and screen are easily adjustable for all users to work comfortably. Position the screen so that it is slightly below eye level so that your children will be seated with their necks in a neutral position while they are working. Purchasing an office chair and desk with ergonomics in mind is helpful.

Another important tip for parents is to closely monitor the amount of screen time their children are getting. If they have big projects that require large amounts of computer time, make sure that they are taking regular breaks to stretch their muscles, as well as staying hydrated so that they will not experience muscle fatigue from sitting in one position for too long.

Lastly, for kids who use cell phones on a regular basis, be aware of the stress placed on the neck, back and shoulders when sending frequent text messages. There have been many reports of tightened neck muscles, shoulder strain and even migraines caused by constantly hunching forward and looking down at small screens.

Being aware of the ergonomics of device usage will prevent the need for chiropractic visits long-term.

Regardless of what it is that keeps you up the simple truth remains. That truth is that sleep is key when it comes to good health. How Do I Get a Good Nights Sleep?

1. Routine Matters

Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. If you are a parent of a school-age child, you know how important this is for children during the school year. If the effects are obvious in regards to kid’s schedules, imagine the havoc an unsteady sleep and wake pattern wreaks on your body.

2. Eliminiate Sensory Stimuli

Keeping the bedroom cool and dark is conducive to having a good nights’s sleep. Cool does not mean freezing, but simply cool rather than warm. Avoiding extreme heat or cold can help regulate the body temperature in a more natural manner. Additionally, if bedtime comes before sunset in portions of the year with longer daylight, it may be worth it to invest in room darkening window covers. Natural sunlight provides a natural stimulant and eliminating this as well as artificial light, will help in allowing for more restful and uninterrupted sleep.

3. Early Dinner

This is a hard thing for any modern families. With Atlanta traffic, sports practices for kids, homework, housework, and a myriad of other activities that demand our time, it is tough to get dinner on the table at a decent hour. Well, when we eat dinner, that of course is not the end of it. Physiologically, the body has a lot of work to do with digesting that dinner. Eating earlier, before 6pm if possible, will allow your body to digest before you sleep rather than having your digestive system fully active as you are fighting to sleep.

3 Tips to Prevent Back Pain

Get Active

Is Text Neck Real?

Neck Pain and How Chiropractic Care May Help You

Determining the Source of Neck Pain

Chiropractors generally ask questions about the pain in order to get a clear picture of the source of the pain. Determining a cause, a specific location, or both will assist in creating an appropriate approach for treatment.   • Have you done anything for your neck pain?

After determining a specific location in the cervical spine that is the root cause of pain, a neck adjustment, which is also known as cervical manipulation, is the procedure commonly used in chiropractic care. This procedure is most often done by hand and often reduces the amount of pain experienced by a patient and increases mobility in the form of tilting and turning the head.
